The Progressive Era
As the United States grew, Americans demanded reforms. Progressives began cleaning up political corruption in the cities and states. Laws improved living conditions in crowded tenement buildings and city streets. Employers had to answer to poor working conditions as unions began to make demands for better pay, shorter working hours, and a safer working environment. In addition, the states ratified several amendments that allowed woman suffrage, income taxes, and the banning of alcohol.
