The West

Sitting Bull

After the Civil War, Americans began moving West again. Attracted by gold and silver strikes, miners and their families flocked to western states and territories. In addition, the federal government passed legislation intended to increase farming in the Great Plains by offering free or cheap land to Americans. As populations increased, so too did the conflict with Native Americans. After decades of war, the United States government moved Indian nations onto reservations. By 1900, the frontier in America ceased to exist.
